Frank S in its first point-to-point run

Patience is a virtue among those who practice the small-scale live-steam hobby: waiting for a new engine takes a while. By February I had lost patience with the two new engines I had ordered and found a used Frank S (made by Aster and sold by LGB) for a reasonable amount. The Frank S got to my Northern California home before I had even finished the gridwork, so I rushed out and bought a three-foot length of 45mm-gauge track and ran it back and forth on the track. The next week the Bay Area Garden Railway Society's annual meeting was held in South San Francisco and the group said it would set up its live-steam track. Above, the Frank S. comes to rest shortly after its first steam-up at the meeting, held March 6, 1999. The portable steam layout was in a point-to-point configuration because there wasn't room to set it up as an oval.
